Bill Matthews recalls:
‘Widegates Reading Room was built in 1907, and extended in 1923.
It was run by the trustees as a reading room. It was going to close in 2002, so my wife asked the then trustees if we could take it over. At that time, there was no water supply. The toilet was flushed by water from the roof coming into a
tank above the toilet. If and when it filled up, it overflowed again!
We formed a committee and registered with the charity commission, adding Village Hall to the title. With a lot of help, we had the water installed, and were lucky enough to be allocated a disabled toilet kit I heard about on Pirate
Radio. We had a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to enable us to fit a disabled access. With other grants and bequests we have had the hall refurbished outside and insulated and repainted inside, had new windows fitted, had a new floor laid
and an emergency exit installed. We had a donation from ‘£££s for People’ with the Western Morning News towards future upkeep and a hearing loop.’
