FANTASTIC FISHY EVENTS FOR FEBRUARY HALF TERM
February Half Term promises to be fun for foodies and rock pool foragers as Looe Marine Conservation
Group host two fantastic events over the February Half Term.
ROCKPOOL RAMBLE Wednesday 15 February 1.30-3.00pm
Another ever popular rockpool ramble will be held at Hannafore Beach, West Looe, starting at 1.30 PM. Matt Nott, the LMCG event leader said "Come and discover the extraordinary winter rock pool residents and brighten up your February with an inspiring and invigorating rock pool ramble. Even in February there's still an amazing variety of seaweeds and creatures to be found in Looe’s beautiful rock pools. If you know where to look you'll be surprised at the wildlife you can find and you never know what may have been washed into the rock pools during a winter storm! Last year we were surprised with an abundance of beautiful starfish." This is a free event suitable for all ages. There’s no need to book. Just wrap up warm, bring wellies but no nets and look out for the Looe Marine Conservation Group sailflags below the Coastguard Station. Donations Welcome.
ANOTHER NIGHT OF FISH 'N TIPS IN LOOE Friday 17 February
After a sell out evening last year, get your tickets in advance for this year's fantastic fishy foodie event on Friday 17 February! The Cornwall Good Seafood Guide and Looe Marine Conservation Group are once again collaborating with Looe experts to host Another Night of Fish n Tips in Looe from 7 - 10 pm on Friday 17 February at the Millpool Centre West Looe. £5 tickets can be purchased in advance at the Millpool Centre and the Looe Tourist Information Centre (open 10 am til 1 pm). Tickets purchased on the night will be £7.
Celebrating the fantastic sustainable seafood landed in the port of Looe in Cornwall, Matt Slater of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust will give an informative illustrated talk giving advice on making the right choices when buying fresh fish. Then Dom Sadler of the Old Sail Loft Restaurant and Julian Clemens of Simply Fish, alongside Angela Harrison of Pengelly's will demonstrate fish preparation and simple cooking techniques and skills. What gets rustled up in the kitchen will be shared with the audience in a Saturday Kitchen style entertaining show where everyone gets to taste the results! There's a licensed bar so it's a great way to wind down on a Friday night.
Matt Slater of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust said ‘The public are increasingly concerned about the health of our oceans and some have been put off seafood by negative stories in the press. However here in Looe we are spoilt for choice with a wide selection of good sustainable seafood on offer, and Cornwall Good Seafood Guide is now here to help us all make good seafood choices. I am looking forward to another great evening in great company, celebrating Looes fabulous sustainable seafood’.
Cornwall Good Seafood Guide is an award winning project of Cornwall Wildlife Trust which encourages us to eat more local sustainable seafood and to think more carefully when buying seafood. The project was initially set up using a grant from the European Fisheries Fund and the Marine Management Organisation facilitated by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group. A user-friendly website was created, by Falmouth web design company Dewsign, which provides information on over sixty seafood species and thirteen fishing and aquaculture methods that are in use today. It makes recommendations on sustainable options and a logo has been created that can be used by supporters of Cornwall Good Seafood Guide to highlight sustainable seafood on menus, packaging, websites and fishmongers counters.
In its first 18 months the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide has proven that the public want to know about seafood sustainability as its website has had over 90,000 page views to date. Over 70 local businesses have signed up as supporters of the project with each one making a contribution to the continuation and constant update of this vital service.
The aim of the project is to help local fishermen fish sustainably to better market their catch to locals and visitors to Cornwall. Reconnecting people to the fishing industry and getting people back in the habit of regularly eating fresh, sustainable Cornish seafood.
